Round 5
Round 5 of the 2023 Bugatti Owners Club /Fassi Classic Speed Championship was held at Prescott's fine Historique event in superb conditions on a perfect late May saturday.
The FASSI class was large with a great position within the lower paddock sharing space with some amazing demonstration vehicles including the popular BRM V16. Track conditions were good with many competitors setting times under their previous best.
The Saloon class was once again the most numerous with a broad selection of fine machinery present. Fastest saloon car time went to Matt Clarke in the Mk1 Mini , under his own PB which had stood for 5 years!. Such is the nature of handicap classes this only gave him a 4 point score - something wrong here as this time is almost unbelievable in a very standard looking Mini! Second on scratch went to Simon Braithwaite in the Mk1 Escort from Mark Hobbs in his Mk2 version. Handicap winner was once again Alister Clark , ever improving as he hones his Triumph Vitesse. Second on handicap was John Barber in his Fiat 600 Abarth from the Mini Clubman of an improving Ben Thorne.
Sportscars had a better entry this time around with nine starters. Fastest was the Scimitar coupe of Garry Cox once again with several sub 50 second runs , second on scratch was Steve Phennah from Tim Cross in the family MG Midget. Handicap winner for the FASSI championship points was Tim Brook who unfortunately damaged the back end of the mighty Corvette on his final run. Second was Ian Beattie back out in the lovely Jaguar XK120 from Ted Elwes in his recently acquired Austin Seven roadster.
A few more Racing cars & Sports Racing cars were present this time with the fastest overall being Ian Baxter in his Brabham, second quickest was Peter Thurston in his Mallock from Martin Jones in the pretty Elva Mk7 sportsracer. Handicap winner was Jeremy Rivers-Fletcher in the tiny BB special from Ian Baxter and then Martin Jones.
