Prescott - Round 7
This was a return to Prescott looking at its very best in a late blast of summer sunshine! The paddocks & spectator areas were back to their former glory following some serious effort by the new groundsman - very well done for some very hard work.
The Henneys classes were assembled en-masse in the upper paddock on the new tarmac. It was great to have all the cars and drivers together for a change rather than being split between the upper and lower areas. The weather was very kind after a preceding week of dreary but dry conditions. Cool nights but sunny and warm days contributed to a whole series of new PB's and broken handicaps. The track remained in great shape all weekend with no major spillages or distruptions.
The 2020 Henneys Championship awards were presented in the paddock during the lunchbreak. Awards winners collected their trophies and some of series Sponsor Mike Henneys cider. Belated congratuations to overall 2020 champion Matt Clarke !.
Saloon Cars:
A field of 10 cars started the meeting , soon to be 9 after Anthony Ward's BMW 2002 broke a drivetrain part on the startline of the first run resulting in an instant retirement. The pace was set by Simon Braithwaite with all four times recorded sub 50 seconds including a new PB at 49.27. This was enough for first place on scratch and third on handicap in the Escort RS1600. Second fastest was Matt Clarke in the mighty Mini just a few hundreths off his PB. Third fastest was Mark Hobbs in the red Escort Mk2 RS2000. First on handicap was Martin Saunders in his Mk1 Escort RS2000 , thrilled to be well under his previous PB. Peter Hall in the Fiat Abarth was second.
Sportscars:
The entry in the class continues to grow with by far the largest field of cars on the day. With the two fast Porsche 911's not present at this event the quickest time honours were recorded by Garry Cox in his yellow Reliant Scimitar Coupe, Just off his PB but well under the 50 second barrier. Second fastest was Ryan Eamer in the family Frogeye sprite with a really good sub 51 second run. Third fastest just over 51 seconds was Mike Henney in his pretty Lotus Elan coupe. Handicap winner was Ian Moss in the big Healy 3000 , second was Ryan Eamer from Steve Phennah in his MGB in third place.
Racing Cars:
With Andy and Les electing to do the two day midland meeting running over the weekend the field was reduced to 4 cars, several other championship regulars had problems which meant they had withdrawn. Grant Cratchley set the pace in his immaculate Brabham BT21 from Martin Jones in the Elva Mk7 sports racer. Third fastest was Jeremy Rivers-Fletcher in the trusty Triumph Special. Mike White was fourth in the MG Special. Handicap victory went to Martin Jones from Grant then Jeremy.
